Summer is in full swing and the Platte River is warming up, making it the perfect time to hit the water. Whether you’re a returning paddler ready to try a new rental, planning your first trip, or organizing an outing with young kids or a big group, Riverside has a trip for you.
There are plenty of ways to explore the scenic Platte River, from canoes and kayaks to tubes, paddleboards, and raft trips. In this post, we’ll help you choose between the three most popular Platte River rentals: canoes, kayaks, and tubes. Come along as we guide you toward the best fit so you can spend less time deciding and more time riding.

Canoes, Kayaks & Tubes — Key Differences
Canoes
Experience a classic river ride with a canoe rental. Our canoes are roomy and perfect for group outings, especially when you want to bring coolers, gear, or even the family dog (just be sure to follow National Park pet rules).
- Spacious: Most canoes hold 2–3 people, with options for families with two small children or one adult and a child.
- Extra Gear, No Problem: Plenty of room for coolers, dry bags, or a furry friend.
- Great for Groups & Kids: Tow a tube for young riders. The Weir makes a perfect halfway stop to switch seats and stretch legs.
- Beginner-Friendly: Canoes are great for slower floats, but they’re more affected by wind and can feel a bit tippy. Keep your center of gravity low, and don’t stand.
- All-Day Option: Ideal for a full day on the river with our Unlimited Time rentals.
Canoeing Tip: Backrests are highly recommended for those in paddling positions to provide extra support and comfort during your Riverside canoe trip.

Kayaks
Stable, and easy to maneuver, kayaks are a top choice for both first-timers and those looking for a more active paddle. With sit-in and sit-on-top options, plus singles and doubles, we have a kayak to match every adventure.
- Stable & User-Friendly: Less tippy than canoes and easy to control. Great for paddlers aged 10 and up.
- Choose Your Style: Sit-on-top singles are easy to hop on and off of. Sit-in kayaks feature adjustable seats and removable foot pegs.
- Go Solo or Together: Double kayaks are perfect for two paddlers or for an adult with a child.
- Kid-Friendly Option: Small children can ride in a tube pulled behind your kayak (we provide the rope).
- Pet-Friendly: Dogs are welcome, just be mindful of size.
- Route Advantage: The Upper Platte is easier to navigate by kayak than by canoe.
Kayaking Tip: We offer a range of kayaks, and for paddlers over 240 lbs, we recommend a double kayak for the best comfort and stability—ask our friendly staff to help you choose.

Tubes
Looking for maximum relaxation? Hop in a tube and let the river take you. Tubes are the ultimate chilled experience, ideal for hot days, short trips, and groups who just want to kick back and enjoy the Lower Platte River.
- Easygoing & Fun: Sit back, relax, and let the river do the work.
- Great for Groups: Perfect for families, friends, and anyone wanting a lazy river trip.
- Different Types: Choose from open or closed bottom styles—all come with handles for easy linking.
- Stay Connected: We provide ropes to tether tubes together or pull a child’s tube behind a canoe or kayak.
- Cooler Tubes Available: Bring your snacks and drinks along for the ride.
- Kid-Friendly Options:
- Under 3? Ride in a parent’s lap for free (Babe-in-Arms).
- Ages 4–5? Ride at half-price, based on comfort.
- Quick and Convenient: A great choice if you’re short on time or have younger children.
Tubing Tip: Wear water shoes to protect your feet and make carrying your tube easier. Depending on your trip, you’ll have a 10-minute walk through woods or gravel either before or after tubing.

Which One is Right for You?
Families
Canoes are ideal for keeping the group together—with room for gear, snacks, or even your dog. Add a tow-along tube for younger kids, and switch seats at the Weir to keep things fun.
Tubes are a hit with older kids and teens—tether a bunch together and float as a pack. Have little ones? Try the Babe-in-Arms tubing option (under 3 rides free in a parent’s lap).
Most Popular: Canoe (with optional tube add-on) | Also Great: Tube
Adventure Seekers
If you’re craving a more active experience, kayaks deliver speed, control, and maneuverability—perfect for the twists and turns of the Upper Platte. Double kayaks let you paddle in sync, while solo options give you full independence.
Canoes can also offer an adventurous full-day paddle for those up for the challenge.
Most Popular: Kayak | Also Great: Canoe (for longer paddle trips)
First-Timers
New to the river? No problem. Tubes require zero experience, just float and enjoy. Kayaks are stable, beginner-friendly, and perfect if you want a bit more control on the water. And canoes are a classic choice and great for first-timers paddling in pairs, though they do take a little coordination.
Most Popular: Tube or Kayak | Also Great: Canoe (if you’re up for a shared paddling experience)
